In Washington a new law was created to punish individuals responsible for leaving a child under the care of a sex offender. If a parent, a legal guardian, an employed child care provider or a nanny entrusts the welfare of the child to someone that they recognize as a registered, or required to, sex offender is against the law. The law applies not only registered sex offenders in the state of Washington, even those registered outside the state are also covered.
It is only right to punish the people that risked the child’s safety, especially since they are the ones that are supposed to look after the child. The crime can be only disproved if the person that was charged presents proof that the registered sex offender has been allowed by the law to have unsupervised interaction with the child. If no evidence can be presented, the defendant will then be considered guilty of the crime. Leaving a child in the care of a registered sex offender is considered to be a misdemeanor
